FareShare Cymru

FareShare Cymru is a food redistribution charity based in Cardiff, operating throughout South Wales. They work with suppliers and distributers in the food industry to redistribute surplus food to charities, community groups and not-for-profit organisations..

The organisations FareShare Cymru work with range from PTAs, Community Councils, Housing Associations and voluntary groups to support people with food.

FareShare Cymru offers weekly food deliveries to the organisations they work with, who at the moment are primarily delivering food parcels to people in need, in their local communities. Katie explains that FareShare Cymru have set up a Local Collection Point in The Vale, allowing a central point where organisations that they work with can collect the food from.

FareShare Cymru has been delivering to the LCP in the Vale since 2018, they believe it is vital to continue to offer this service whilst in the current situation, so that their member organisations can continue to support their service users with food. “This is something needed now more than ever before”, says Katie Padfield Assistant Project Manager at FareShare Cymru.

FareShare Cymru have found that their member organisations have reacted very positively to the changing environment, increasing capacity to get food to more people. Cadogs based at Cadoxton Primary School said “When the school closed before lockdown we estimated that we would support up to 30 families from our school community with weekly food parcels. Situations for many of our families changed due to work closures, health, etc., and that number increased.” After the Vale council heard of their fantastic work, they asked if they were able to support families from all schools in Barry, so they decided to support families from an additional 5 schools, delivering up to 150 food parcels in a week.

Castleland Community centre, have been redistributing the food they receive to local charities in Barry; Ty Hafan, Atal Y Fro, and Vale of Glamorgan Council Children’s Services, as well as the individual families they usually support.

FareShare Cymru are delighted to see their members working with other organisations and changing their food provision to meet the needs of people in the current situation, allowing to support as many people as possible during this time.

FareShare Cymru are still able to deliver food to more organisations so if you’re doing something with food to support those in the local community, or if you’d like to set something up during this time, please get in touch with Katie – Katie@fareshare.cymru/ 07773 618175
