Store Cupboard Essentials

Having a selection of store cupboard ingredients is a good way of having food on hand to make a variety of recipes. Tinned food, dry ingredients, herbs and spices, etc have a long shelf life and are very versatile. We, at Food Vale, have made a list of store cupboard essentials and recipes that go along with them.

Below is a list of store cupboard ingredients that are great to keep in the cupboard as they can be used in a variety of recipes:

  • Tomatoes (peeled or chopped)
  • Potatoes Vegetables (e.g. sweetcorn, carrots, peas, mixed vegetables – preferably in water)
  • Chickpeas
  • Lentils
  • Baked beans (ideally reduced salt and sugar)
  • Fruit, in own juices rather than syrup (e.g. pineapple, pears, mandarins)
  • Fish, in water but not oil or brine (like tuna, salmon, sardines, etc)
  • Beans (i.e. kidney beans, pinto beans, black beans)

  • Pasta (any type, ideally wholewheat)
  • Noodles (medium egg noodles, rice noodles, etc)
  • Rice (e.g. long grain, brown, basmati)
  • Instant mash potato
  • Couscous
  • Flour (such as plain, wholemeal, self-raising, bread flour)
  • Baking powder
  • Stock (veg, chicken, beef, etc – preferably low salt versions)
  • Dried fruit
  • Lentils
  • Nuts (any type but plain rather than salted, covered in chocolate, etc)
  • Cereal and rolled oats
  • Yeast

  • Black pepper
  • Mixed herbs
  • Curry powder
  • Chilli powder
  • Italian herbs
  • Mixed spice
  • Garam masala

  • Vegetable oil
  • Peanut butter (or other nut butters)
  • Passata
  • Pesto
  • Tomato puree
  • Soy sauce
  • Worcestershire sauce / Henderson’s relish
